タウンシップAbout the township

昨日、金曜日で会議がなくせっかくの機会でしたので、
On last Friday, I don't any meeting.

オフィスの近くにあるタウンシップに一緒に訪問させて頂きました。
So, I was introduced one of the famous township(Alexandra) close to my office.

タウンシップとは、アパルトヘイト時代の黒人居住地区のことで、
Township is the houses area for ONLY blacks in Apartheid era,

当時ここから出るには許可証が必要で無断で出ると逮捕されたそうです。
they were arrested if they went out without any permission at that time.

インターンシップ先の人の幼少の頃の家で現在はおじさんが住んでいるお家だそうです。
The house I visited was my coworker's house when she was child, her uncle is still staying.

まずは、こちら

大通りから一本入ったここはまるで別世界です。
This is completely different world.

ちなみにこのタウンシップは自分の家からおそらく２０分もしない場所です。
This township is close to my house as well, it'll take 20 min. away.

ゴミ収集がストライキに入ったそうで道路はゴミでいっぱい。
The road was full of the garbage.

家々にはトイレがないそうで、みんな道端にある仮設トイレで用をたすそうです。

There are no toilet in their houses, they do it in portable toilet in the road.

そして排水口等がないため、トイレから水が道路に漏れています。

Because it's portable, water is sometimes leaking over the road.

写真は撮れませんでしたがやぎが道端を歩いておりプラスチックを食べていました。

I couldn't take the picture, however, the goats were eating plastic.

正面に見える建物は、アパルトヘイト時代の男性用の宿舎、ちなみに女性用の宿舎も少し離れたところにあります。まだ人が住んでいそうな気配がありました。

The building at the center was the accommodation for only men in Apartheid.

By the way, there are one for only women near this building.

そしてここがそのお家で左のオレンジっぽいところだけで、

The orange one is her uncle's house

奥のパラボラアンテナのあるお家は別の家族と非常に狭い中で生活しているそう。

The house with antenna is for the other family. It was really small.

入ってすぐにキッチン兼ダイニングです。

This is the photo of kitchen and dining just next to the entrance.

そして隣の部屋にベッド。

The next room is bedroom.

で、おしまいです。写真は撮れてませんが、
This is all room of her uncle's.
テレビの前においてある小さなカウチに当時彼女は寝ていたそう。
At that time, she was sleeping on the sofa in front of the TV just next to the door for the entrance.

もちろんお風呂もありません。右下に見える桶にお湯をいれてそれで体を流すとのこと。

They don't have any shower room, they will use a small tub at the corner of this photo.

この彼女のおじさんは高齢のためトイレがありましたが、普通のお家にはありません。

There were a toilet in his house because he is old, but normally there aren't.

そしてとなりのおうちへ向かう道は

And the way to the next house is...

こんな感じで、扉が２つ見えますでしょうか。こんな狭いところにまた別の２家族が住んでいます。

Can you see the 2 windows in this picture. 2 families is staying in such a small houses.

そしてお家の前で話をしていると、学校のスクールバスが前を通り、自分を見るなり、

And when we were talking in front of the house, a school bus was passing and they said

「China!China!ニーハオ！」

" China! China! Ni-hao!"

と声をかけてくれました。普段は自分はニーハオと言われて手は振りませんが

Usually I didn't say anything when I was told ni-hao because I'm not Chinese.

子どもたちの純粋な笑顔に思わず手を振っていました。

I couldn't stop saying hello and waving my hands because their smiles were so pure and really cute.

子どもたちの純粋さに心が痛みます。。

Their smiles were so pure that it made my heart painful.

このエリアは南アで別に特別なごく限られた地域なんかではなく、非常に多く・広く存在しています。

The townships are not very small place and nothing special, but quite a lot and very large. 

ここは自分の家から２０分かそこらで行ける場所にあるので、

As I mentioned above, it's just 20 minutes away from my house.

あまりの環境の差に愕然としたのと格差問題が解決して本当の南アフリカの夜明けが来るのには

I was shocked such a big different circumstance, I thought it need still much time to solve this situation of inequality to come the real sunrise for South Africa.

まだまだ時間がかかりそうだなと感じることが出来ました。

最後に、これはトイレとゴミと洗濯物（奥の旗みたいに見えるもの）です。

At last, this picture is toilet and garbage and laundries like flag. 

彼女自身言っていましたが、この衛生環境では病気に罹るのは簡単なのよと言っていたのが、

It is impressive that he said it's quite easy to catch any disease in this situation.

強く印象に残っています。
