収入源全てチップ All income from tips

私の地元の長崎では数年ぶりの大雪で大変なことになっているようですが、まだまだ暑い南アフリカです。
My home town Nagasaki had a trobule because of lots of the snow in several years, but here South Africa is still hot now.


今回はチップについて。
This time is about tips.

よく海外から日本に来た人がチップがない日本の習慣にびっくりするとか、
The foreigners who came to japan will be surprised about the custom that japanese don't have it,

日本人が海外に行ってどのくらいチップを払えばよいか困るとか
Japanese travellers will sometimes worry about how much do we have to pay it.

よくあるトピックの一つかと思います。
 I think those are very typical topic for us.

もちろんここ南アもチップの習慣はあります。おおよそ支払金額の10%くらいです。
Of course, there are tip custom in South Africa affected by UK. It's almost 10% of the purchasing amount.

そして、ここには国内最低賃金というものが基本的にありません。（一部労組間にはありますが。）
And they don't have national minimum wage basically. They have it in some labour union.

ここのレストランのウエイター・ウエイトレスの給料はなんとチップのみだそうです。
(一部のレストランには基本給があるそうですが、それでも月1万か2万程度だそうです。）
The income of the waiter and weitress here is only coming from tip not salary like us.
In some restaurant, they can get basic income. However it's quite small amount such as R1000/month.


その店が繁盛してない場合、客が来ないのは彼らのせいでないのに給料は「０」。
If the restaurant doesn't have customers, they can't earn money even though  it's not their fault.

さらに契約等を結んでいるわけではないので、明日から来なくていいよと言われる可能性も。
And the restaurant doesn't hire them with certain contracts,
there is a possibility that they're told "you don't need to come here any more".

店が正式に雇っているのは、マネージャーとコックのみ。
They hire properly only manager and chef.

そんなんでよく店が成り立つなと思うわけですが、失業率が30%を超すこの国には
I can't imagine that such a restaurant can manage their business, however, they can do because they can find any staff instead of current staff anytime in this country which unemployment rate is over 30%.

働きたい人は山のようにいていつでも替えがきくからこういった傍若無人が成り立つようです。

そこで、支払いの時には必ず自分の席のウェイターを呼んで、支払いをするのが礼儀になっているそうです。
Therefore, it's the etiquette to call a waiter/waitress who helps our table and to pay our bill to them including tips, to make sure my tip is going to them.

自分だったらそんな所で怖くて働けませんが、家でなにもしないよりはお金が手に入るからと
I can't work under such a severe condition, but many people are working there because working is much better than doing nothing in the house.

働く人はいるようで非常に厳しい現実です。
I didn't know this situation, and it's quite severe challenge for them..
