国民性？Nationality?

まだまだ寒い南アフリカです。
Here is still cold in the morning and evening.

この日曜日についにヨハネスブルグのセントラルに行ってきました。
On this sunday, I went to the central of johannesburg.

I'll post it about the central next time, I was surprised about the defference of  scenery between
my place and central. For me, It is like the other country.

あまりにも違うのでまるで別の国に来たかのような感覚を覚えました。


さて、先日オフィスにて16時ころから雑談
Last week, we had some chat 2 weeks ago.

（アフタヌーンセッションと皆で勝手に名づけていますが、実はこれが非常にためになるんです）
We called this afternoon session, but it is very helpful and useful for me.

をした時のお話です。

黒人の女性の方が「私たち黒人は自分が知り得た情報を隠す習慣がある。
The black lady said that we black person sometimes tend to hide the information we get.

だから貧困からなかなか抜け出せないし社会の発展を妨げてるんだ」と話をされていました。
Therefore, this thinking prevent from developing the country and lifting ourselves out of the spiral of poverty.

その後親しくしてくれている黒人の同僚が例え話をして紹介してくれました。
After that, my co-worker explain this thinking with some example.

『複数の黒人が砂漠の中で水を探しているとして、自分だけが水場を見つけたらきっと周りに言わ
 If some black people were looking for the water in a dessert, I can't tell anything when I found the water.
　ないだろう。なぜなら言ってしまうと自分がこの先飲む分の水まで無くなってしまうから。
 If I tell that I found the water, I think it will be gone soon.
　自分が会社の社長だとして、若い黒人を雇ったとしても重要な情報は与えなくないし、
 If I am the president of the company and hire the young black guy, I don't want to teach him well and give the important informations to him
　あまり育てないと思う。それは、彼が偉くなって自分の立場が危うくなると考えるから。』
because I think he will be the president instead of me.
もちろんそういった発想は自分の中にはなかったので驚きましたが、
I was very surprised about this because I don't have such idea,
とても重要な話を話してくれて非常に感謝しています。
but I really appreciated to talk such a sensitive things,

ここからは完全に自分の持論ではありますが、
I'll post my opinion below.

なんでそういった発想を持つようになったのか考えてみることにしました。
I try to think about the reason why they get this idea.

色々な見方が出来るかとは思いますが、自分はアパルトヘイト時代の名残ではと考えます。
There are many aspect to reach this idea, I think that this is negative legacy for apartheid.

自分たちの土地を取り上げられ、強制的に移住させられ自分たちの満足のいく仕事ができず
They were taken away their own land and moved to the other place. They couldn't get enough job.

貧困に苦しんでいた時には、自分が生きるのに精一杯で明日の食料を確保が困難だったのでは
It was really difficult to get the food to live tomorrow when they were suffered from the poverty.

と思います。また土地を取り上げられていますから、周囲も含めて自分たちが食べる用の食料を
And they couldn't cultivate for their food because their land were taken away.

十分に育てることが出来なかったんだと思います。

そこで、自分とごくごく近い親族の生活を守るために自分の物を囲い込まなければという発想が
Therefore I guess that they have to hide their own things to protect their life with their family or relatives.

生まれたのではと推測しています。


じゃあ、日本はどうなのか。
How about japan?

日本人の多くは元々は農耕民族です。土地が狭く田んぼや畑は段々にしなければならず
Most of Japanese are originally agricultual people. They have to cooperate with neigbours

多くの人手が必要だし、周囲の人といわゆる物々交換をして食べ物を得ないと自分が作った
to construct rice fields and fields for vegetable and to exchange their food.

一種類のものしか食べられないので、お互いを頼らないと生きていけなかったんだと思います。
I think we have to cooperate each other to eat foods otherwise we have to eat only few kind of food on our own.

また狭い土地のため、周囲と変わったことをするとすぐ村八分といういわゆる仲間はずれに
When we do some different things from others, we'll be ostracized in small community.

また日本は他国に比べ他の人種がいない単一の民族国家です。
And Japan is a a country that has only one race.

なってしまうために「他人と一緒であること」に安心感を見出すのではと思います。
Therefore, we felt "To be same as the neigbors" a relief.

逆に今でもこういった思想が抜け切らないためなのか、周囲とちょっと違うことをする子供に対して
However, because of this idea, in our school such as elementary or junior or high, there are some

小学校や中学校ではいじめが後を絶たず、自分の居場所をなくしてしまった子供が自殺してしまう
students who commit suicide because they are bullied for doing some different thing from the others.

という悲しい事件が後を絶たず、日本では大きな社会問題となっています。
These kinds of happings are not quite rare, therefore this is very big problem.

別にどちらの民族が優れているとかそういう事ではなくて、
I don't want to mention which people is superior or not.

生まれた土地柄や歴史、教育などの非常に多くの環境により形成されたものなので、
It is very important to think about first and understand the nationality which is coming from the various circumstances such as education situation, local color and history.

この国民性というものを十分に理解して、

じゃあどうやって克服したらいいのかというのを考えることが大事なんだと思います。
After that it can be possible to find or create the solution.

南アフリカは、ほんの一部の大金持ちと多くの貧しい人たちからなる国です。
In this country, there are few rich people and many poor people.

この原因について冒頭の考え方を当てはめてみると、
I think I can fit this thinking into the reason.

アパルトヘイトが終わり20年も経ちましたが、一部の黒人たちは裕福になったけど、
20 years have passed since the apartheid was ended, some of the black became rich.

彼らは自分たちのお金や知識を囲い込むがためにうまく冨の再分配ができず
However, they tend to protect their assets. So in this society, a redistribution of wealth doesn't work well.

結局ちょっと裕福な黒人が増えただけであんまり変わってない状況になってしまっている、
As a result, the situation that many black people is suffering from povety can't be changed.

と見ることもできると思うわけです。
It can be possible the mentioned above is true.

じゃあどうしたらもっと平等に暮らせる社会がこの国に来るの？というところですが、
Then how should we do? and how should they do?

それはよくわかりません。
I have no idea now.

考え方変えようよといってもそんなにすぐは変わらないのは、日本のイジメ問題と同じなのかもしれませんね。
It is quite difficult to change the mind ourselves. And we know the difficulty through the bully problems in japan.


以上ですが、全ての黒人の人達がこういった考えを持っているわけではないだろうし、
That's all my opinion, but not all of the black people have such idea,

この考え方だけがこの国の発展を妨げているわけではないとも思いますが、
and not only this idea do prevent from developing the country.

一つの見方としてありかなとも思います。
I think this opinion shown above may be extremely a little, but it can be possible.
